Accessibility compliance and plain language
Overview
Much of my professional experience has been ensuring my work is compliant with federal disability law, specifically Sections 504 and 508. My professional experience as a federal contractor has allowed me to become adept in Section 508 law as it applies to digital content. I have experience in remediation and testing of documents like PowerPoints and PDFs to ensure 508 compliance. I am also well-versed in performing plain language audits of complex content and providing recommendations to ensure the copy is attainable to users of all reading levels. I have also led several successful, federal agency-wide learning sessions regarding Section 508, digital accessibility, and plain language.
Additionally, my experience as an educator made me familiar with Section 504 law as I ensured each student had equal access to the material at hand. This included:
Serving as teacher of record during IEP/504 compliance meetings
Using innovative classroom engagement strategies
Aligning all lesson plans with applicable state standards
Ensuring materials were available via multiple mediums
Strategy
Ensuring content is understandable is not limited to translation alone. I have years of experience in making sure the content I present is digestible for all audiences, whether they’re federal agencies, or high school students.
